U.S.A. State Department issues worldwide security alert due to potential for attacks on LGBTQ+ people and events

The U.S.A. State Department issued a global security alert on Friday in response to the potential threat of terrorist attacks against LGBTQ+ individuals and events, ‘CNN’ reports.

“Due to the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations, or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests, the Department of State advises U.S. citizens overseas to exercise increased caution. The Department of State is aware of the increased potential for foreign terrorist organization-inspired violence against LGBTQI+ persons and events and advises U.S. citizens overseas to exercise increased caution,” the alert stated.

The alert was issued two weeks before the commencement of Pride Month on June 1. The department cautioned U.S.A. citizens to remain vigilant in popular tourist locations, “including Pride celebrations and venues frequented by LGBTQ+ persons.”

Earlier this week, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security also issued a warning that foreign terrorist organisations and their supporters might target LGBTQ+ events and venues as Pride Month approaches.

Last year, Austrian police thwarted a plan to attack Vienna’s annual Pride Parade, arresting three suspects—aged 14, 17, and 20—who were linked to Islamic extremism. In the same year, for the first time in its 40-year history, the Human Rights Campaign declared a national state of emergency for LGBTQ+ Americans due to rising threats.

The year before, two dozen men believed to be affiliated with a White nationalist group were arrested, preventing their plans to incite violence at a pride celebration in Idaho.
