U.S.A.: The Dignity Dash 5k will centre trans “solidarity and visibility” amidst endless anti-trans attacks

In the U.S.A., a Chicago LGBTQ+ community centre has revealed plans to host one of the nation’s inaugural 5K races focused on trans individuals.

Brave Space Alliance (BSA), which is the first Black trans-led LGBTQ+ centre on the city’s South Side, will organise the Dignity Dash: Running for Our Lives 5K on August 17th at AIDS Garden Chicago, according to ‘LGBTQ Nation’.

“The Dignity Dash is more than a race — it’s a powerful statement of solidarity and visibility,” stated Channyn Lynne Parker, CEO of Brave Space Alliance. “In a time when trans lives are under attack across the country, this event affirms our existence, celebrates our resilience, and galvanizes our community to run toward liberation together. It’s not just about crossing a finish line; it’s about showing up for one another, honoring ourselves and our ancestors, and investing in a future where trans people not only survive but thrive.”

Participants have the option to join individually or as part of a team and may run in honour of a trans person. The run’s proceeds will benefit BSA’s services, with the organisation aiming to raise over $100,000 (approximately £ 74,000).

This race takes place amid ongoing disputes over transgender participation in running events, particularly concerning the establishment of nonbinary divisions.

On a broader scale, the governing body for track and field, World Athletics, recently introduced new anti-trans policies. In March, the organisation’s president, Sebastian Coe, indicated that female athletes might need to undergo genetic testing to prevent trans athletes from joining women’s teams.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to stop gender verification testing in 1999, arguing that sex determination by chromosomes is controversial since other genes and factors can influence sexual development, particularly in intersex individuals.

Nevertheless, Coe insists these tests have validity, though as of March, World Athletics was still seeking a provider to conduct them. The organisation aims to implement testing by September for its Outdoor World Championships.

Meanwhile, trans athletes continue to face challenges under the current administration.

The GOP has been promoting the notion that trans women possess a biological advantage over cis women, thereby suggesting they should be excluded from women’s sports. However, a recent study found that trans women often underperform compared to cis athletes.

The study indicates that transitioning leads to various physical changes, such as a lower centre of mass, altered fat distribution, decreased muscle mass and bone density, and reduced blood oxygen levels.

The president has issued an executive order titled Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports, which seeks to bar trans women from participating in women’s sports, claiming their inclusion contravenes Title IX.

After the order was signed, Secretary of State Marco Rubio instructed U.S.A. Immigration officials to deny visas to trans athletes attempting to enter the U.S.A. and permanently ban them for “misrepresenting” their birth sex.
