UK organizers optimistic about hosting EuroPride 2027

The team behind Pride in Gloucestershire is optimistic about their chances of securing the bid to host EuroPride 2027. They have submitted a proposal for the European celebrations, which they anticipate could bring an estimated £35 million boost to the local economy.

Richard Stevens, the Chairperson, emphasized the county's “reputation and experience in hosting major events.” He stated, “I believe we have a strong bid and I'm confident that we can make this happen." EuroPride rotates venues across Europe, with upcoming hosts including Thessaloniki in Greece, Lisbon in Portugal, and Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

As the BBC reports, other contenders for the 2027 celebrations include Torino Pride in Italy, Baltic Pride in Vilnius, Lithuania, and Torremolinos Pride in Spain. Mr. Stevens noted that the UK stands at a "pivotal point" in LGBTQ+ history, especially in light of the "growing influence of extremism." He mentioned the team's commitment to creating a lasting legacy for both the county and Europe, aiming to empower the LGBTQ+ community with the message of being heard.

With several major international events already hosted in Gloucestershire—such as the Cheltenham Races, Cheltenham Jazz Festival, and Gloucester Tall Ships Festival—Mr. Stevens underscored the area's capability to successfully deliver a European Pride event. He expressed hope that hosting EuroPride would highlight the presence of LGBTQ+ individuals beyond the larger capital cities.

The bid, which has garnered support from local MPs, outlines a two-week festival expected to attract over 120,000 visitors from the UK and abroad. This festive period would culminate in a finale event at Gloucester Park, accommodating up to 50,000 attendees.

Gloucester City Council, which supports Pride in Gloucestershire, has declared its full backing for the application. A spokesperson added, “Hosting EuroPride in 2027 would significantly contribute to our vision of equality, diversity, and inclusion, particularly for the legacy it creates for the LGBTQ+ community in our county. We have committed in principle to providing key venues such as Gloucester Park, Kings Square, and Blackfriars Priory for the launch, weekend festival, and march if our bid is successful.”

The decision on who will host EuroPride 2027 will be announced on November 2 at the annual conference of the European Pride Organisation, where each candidate will present their case to the judges. This event will be streamed live on Facebook. “It's a very close call,” said Mr. Stevens, but he remains hopeful, stating, “I believe we have a strong bid and I'm confident that we can do this.”
