Same-sex couples will soon be in all British school textbooks. Pearson, the UK education and publishing service that owns EdExcel and publishes thousands of textbooks a year, have said they will update their products to ensure they will be LGBT-inclusive.
Textbooks will include same-sex couples and transgendered people in examples and questions. This will include all subjects from math to science.
Pearson have also sponsored a handbook by Stonewall called ‘Creating an LGBT-Inclusive Curriculum’. The handbook will advise teachers on how to tweak their lessons so LGBT+ students “see themselves represented in what they’re learning.”
In the foreword for the book, written by Stonewall chief executive Ruth Hunt, it states: “For every young person to be prepared for life in modern Britain, it’s vital that their curriculum reflects the full diversity of the world they live in. When pupils are supported to understand diversity and celebrate difference, they can develop accepting attitudes towards those who are different to them, and feel proud of the things that make them different themselves.”
