Ukraine launches LGBTQ+ inclusive training series for armed forces

Ukraine has introduced a new online educational series on LGBTQ+ inclusion within its armed forces, signaling growing institutional support for equality in the military.

The 11-episode program, published on the state platform Diia.Education, was created by the NGO “Ukrainian LGBT Military for Equal Rights” in cooperation with the Ministry of Digital Transformation and international partners. Funding for production came from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ukraine.

Designed for unit commanders, officers responsible for moral and psychological support, cadets, and military psychologists, the series presents inclusive conduct as a core element of military professionalism. The lessons emphasize that respect for LGBT servicemembers strengthens cohesion, trust, and operational effectiveness, while discrimination weakens combat readiness and undermines collective security.

Participants can review best practices from NATO member states where equality standards and diversity policies have been integrated into defense structures over many years. The course also outlines Ukrainian legal protections against discrimination, helping officers translate human rights norms into daily military practice.

The authors explicitly seek to dismantle stereotypes about LGBT people in uniform, arguing that such myths erode trust inside units and create unsafe environments for those who serve. Each episode, available in both Ukrainian and English, is followed by a knowledge test to reinforce key messages and measure understanding.

An official offline presentation of the project for the media is scheduled in Kyiv on July 16, 2026, with organizers positioning the initiative as part of Ukraine’s wider alignment with European human rights standards. Recent participation of Ukrainian diplomats in Pride events abroad further illustrates this broader shift toward public support for LGBT equality.
