UK's First National LGBTQ+ Museum To Open

UK's First National LGBTQ+ Museum To Open

January 24, 2022

The UK will now be home to its first ever national museum dedicated to LGBTQ+ people and their history.

Queer Britain announced that its first physical museum will be in London, with doors opening to the public from Spring this year. The museum will be completely free to visitors and has promised to be completely accessible, fitted with lifts and ramps.

Queer Britain is the charity behind the historic opening, having worked tirelessly to secure the physical space which aims to celebrate LGBTQ+ people, stories, and ideas. According to the charity's website, the new space will be an “essential” place for all regardless of people's identities and sexuality.

Joseph Galliano, director and co-founder, said: “It’s time the UK had an LGBTQ+ museum, for all. And we are delighted to have found our first home in beautiful Granary Square with Art Fund as our first landlord. It’s a prime location, accessible to swathes of the country, and in a part of town with a rich Queer heritage.”

According to Wales Online, the announcement has received positive responses on social media, with over 3,000 people liking the news on Twitter. Trustees of the organization also showcased their excitement.

Stonewall founder, Lisa Power, has said the community now has a “home” for its history.

“I'm really excited that Queer Britain is finally going to have a space to show what we can do and that we're here for all the community, from old lesbian feminist warhorses like me, to young queer folk of all genders and ethnicities,” she said.

“Queer Britain aims to tell our many and diverse histories, and now we have a home to do that from.”

The new museum comes after Queer Britain was opened back in 2018 at a reception at Hotel Cafe Royal's iconic Oscar Wilde Lounge. The event was attended by the likes of Tom Daley, Dustin Lance Black, and various other activists and change makers within the LGBTQ+ community.
