Uruguay’s LGBTQ+ community urges for political representation before October elections

In this crucial election year, Uruguay’s LGBTQ+ community is focusing on strategic reflection and coordinated actions.

As the presidential elections draw near, numerous voices from both inside and outside Uruguay’s political sphere are calling for representation and actively tackling the challenges that queer individuals encounter in securing seats in Congress.

Uruguay is distinguished as one of the first Latin American nations to implement legislation and policies aimed at improving the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals. It is also seen as one of the world’s safest destinations for queer tourists.

Despite these developments, LGBTQ+ representation in Congress and other political areas has been insufficient in recent years. Activists see the upcoming October 27 election as an opportunity to regain ground.

Diego Sempol, a prominent Uruguayan political scientist, highlighted to the ‘Washington Blade’ the importance of LGBTQ+ involvement in national politics, saying, “It is crucial for the LGBTQ+ community to hold positions in Congress to make their issues visible.” He also noted that such involvement not only promotes inclusive legislative progress but also confronts societal prejudices.

Sempol further commented, “Running for Congress or the Senate is significant as it highlights the LGBTIQ+ population politically, contributing positively since obtaining electoral positions indicates progress or regression in societal biases regarding gender diversity.”

Daniela Buquet, spokesperson for the Uruguayan advocacy group Colectivo Ovejas Negras, described the LGBTQ+ movement’s strategy during the electoral cycle. “We find ourselves in a context where the major political discussions are still centered on traditional figures, mostly white, upper-class cis males,” Buquet explained. “However, we are moving forward strategically, strengthening our demands as the campaign progresses.”

The recent primaries have shown a political arena dominated by established figures, with discussions frequently excluding the needs of social movements. Buquet pointed out that while prominent LGBTQ+ candidates are rare, there is noticeable progress at lower legislative levels, where legislators are increasingly addressing LGBTQ+ issues.

Uruguay’s electoral landscape is markedly split between the main parties, Frente Amplio and Partido Nacional, with conservative parties like Cabildo Abierto part of the scene. “We have seen attempts of setbacks by sectors such as Cabildo Abierto, but also resistance and social mobilization that have prevented significant negative changes,” Buquet noted.

The current administration has faced criticism for a lack of progress on LGBTQ+ matters. “The comprehensive law for trans people is still not fully implemented, and educational and health programs remain insufficient,” Buquet remarked.

The discussions on inclusion and sexual diversity in Uruguay extend beyond the legislative realm to encompass the effective implementation of inclusive social and educational policies. LGBTQ+ activists hope the next government will take concrete measures to ensure rights and enhance the quality of life for all citizens, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

With a diversity march planned for this month, LGBTQ+ organisations are set to continue their advocacy for equitable representation and effective public policies. The challenge is evident: “Transform visibility into tangible political action that benefits all of Uruguayan society.”
