The Head of the US Coast Guard has released a statement saying their branch of the Armed Forces will not comply with the ban on transgender service members unless expressly told so. On Tuesday Commandant Adm. Paul Zukunft told a House Appropriations Committee that at least 17 of his 40,000 active-duty Coast members were transgender, including someone on his personal staff.
“We are certainly committed to their continued service in the United States Coast Guard,” Zukunft said. “We will make sure that there is a one-policy for all service members.”
Speaking of the officer on his staff who is transgender he said: “Taylor’s family has disowned her. I told Taylor, ’I will not turn my back [on you]. We have made an investment in you and you have made an investment in the Coast Guard and I will not break faith’… All of (the trans officers) are doing meaningful Coast Guard work today.”
In a later statement, he reiterated that “all qualified people who wish to serve in our nation’s military should have the opportunity to do so.”
