US Olympic Committee bars trans women from women’s sports under new policy

The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has quietly updated its eligibility rules to exclude transgender women from competing in women’s sports categories. The change aligns with Executive Order 14201, issued by former President Donald Trump earlier this year, which mandates the exclusion of transgender women from female sports divisions in federally supported institutions.

As reported by Out, the revised USOPC policy which was tucked away in a terse paragraph, and introduced without a formal press release, states that the committee is committed to “protecting opportunities for athletes participating in sport” and will ensure “a fair and safe competition environment consistent with Executive Order 14201 and the Ted Stevens Olympic & Amateur Sports Act.”

The policy follows broader changes across the U.S. sports landscape. Shortly after the executive order was signed in February, the NCAA adopted similar restrictions for collegiate athletes, requiring that participants in women’s divisions be assigned female at birth.

The new regulations have sparked national debate. Supporters argue the measures are necessary to maintain competitive fairness in women’s sports, while critics – including medical professionals and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups –question the scientific basis and warn of potential discrimination. Concerns have also been raised about the impact on gender non-conforming athletes and the possibility of intrusive verification processes.

The USOPC’s policy may also create complications for American athletes competing internationally, as it contrasts with the International Olympic Committee’s more flexible approach, which allows sport-specific guidelines for transgender eligibility.
