US school teacher alleges he was fired for LGBT+ advocacy

A Massachusetts elementary teacher has alleged he has been fired because of his LGBT+ advocacy on campus. Cory Grant was the head teacher for the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades at Harborlight Montessori School in Beverly.

Grant was told he was fired for funding reasons, but he believes otherwise. He had been teaching at the school for three years over which time he attempted to help students organise a Pride Day, removed the gender-specific signs on a single-occupancy restroom, and gave out purple pins after the Orlando shooting. All of which Grant claims the school’s administration deemed inappropriate.

Hillary Schwab, Grant’s attorney, told the press “Harborlight chose to fire one of its most popular teachers rather than face up to its discriminatory actions.”

The head of the school, Paul Horovitz, has denied such claims:

‘As a Montessori school, one of our guiding principles is that education needs to be an available choice to all students, no matter how they learn or who they are,’ he said in a statement. ‘We welcome and promote the diversity of our students, no matter their race, color, gender, or gender identity. If Mr. Grant is saying something different, he clearly did not understand the school, its practices and its beliefs.’
