Wake Forest baseball coach Tom Walter apologises for apparent anti-gay slur

Wake Forest and their baseball coach, Tom Walter, expressed regret on Tuesday for what seemed to be an anti-gay remark caught on television cameras during an NCAA regional game against Tennessee.

“I deeply regret my frustrated outburst last night and understand the pain and disappointment it has caused,” Walter stated in a school-issued announcement. “I accept the consequences and apologize to the University of Tennessee, Wake Forest University, and both the SEC & ACC.”

According to ‘ESPN’, Walter mentioned that he reviewed the video footage and does not recall the exact moment, yet he emphasised, “That language does not align with my personal values or the standards of our program.”

Wake Forest’s athletic director, John Currie, expressed he was “surprised and deeply disappointed,” mentioning he had conversations with Walter after the game and again on Tuesday morning.

“I feel for those most affected by such words,” Currie remarked. “This incident is entirely out of character for him and fails to uphold the standards of Wake Forest Athletics, Wake Forest University, or the Atlantic Coast Conference.”

In the game, Tennessee defeated Wake Forest 11-5 on Monday night, earning a spot in a best-of-three super regional matchup against Arkansas to vie for a place in the College World Series.

A representative from the ACC did not respond promptly to an email requesting comment.
