Walter Mercado, South American LGBT+ People’s “Source Of Comfort” Has Died

Television astrologer Walter Mercado, whose “flamboyant persona” made him a star in South American media, and an icon for the Latin American LGBT+ community, has died at age 88.

“Mercado was known throughout Latin American for the melodrama of his daily horoscopes, delivered on internationally broadcast networks such as Univision with an exaggerated trilling of the "r.'' He favored colorful brocaded capes and huge gemstone rings, which he flashed while pointing at viewers,” ‘The Baltimore Sun’ reports.

Although Mercado never publicly discussed his sexual orientation, he is perceived as a “source of comfort” for many in the Latin American LGBT+ community with his on-screen presence.

Mercado was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico.

Apart for an astrologer, he was a well-known dancer and theatre actor and also appeared in several soap operas.
