Warsaw Mayor Signs Declaration to Protect LGBT+ Rights

Rafał Trzaskowski, the mayor of Warsaw, has signed a declaration pledging support to the LGBT+ community, the first of its kind in central-eastern Europe. It’s also the first official document in Poland to ever recognise LGBT+ rights, reports Gay Star News.

The declaration promises an LGBT+ community centre and hostel, a local crises intervention centre, and access to discrimination-free sex education in city schools.

“Aside from implementing specific solutions to the issues of our community, today is about joy and pride about living in Warsaw which is becoming a Rainbow City and a beacon for the region,” said Oktawiusz Chrzanowskfrom the LGBT+ organisation Love Does not Exclude.

“We can hope for a safer environment for us and our partners, friends, and families.”

Several right wing groups criticised the declaration, claiming LGBT+ are a threat to society because of “high HIV infection rates,”while the head of the Regional Education Board in the city of Krakow said LGBT+ education “promotes paedophilia.”

“Rhetorics of this kind are nothing new to us,” said Hubert Sobecki from Love Does not Exclude.

“The goal of the right-wing media and activists is to cause a chilling effect, blocking implementation of the Declaration and stopping us from repeating our success in other cities – We won’t yield to this hate."
