Clearasil has faced an onslaught of criticism for airing a new “prom-themed” ad online. The thirty-second ad features a teenage girl complaining about a pimple forming on her head, the camera zooms in to show a pimple as a “dud date”: a flamboyantly limp wristed teenager in a pink suit. The girl drowns out the date with Clearasil so she can have her big night.
Savage Garden singer Darren Hayes tweeted out his disapproval of the ad: “Imagine the marketing department brainstorming this @Clearasil commercial. 'Let's make the pimple an extremely gay guy in a pink suit and then we'll kill it so the girls can go to the prom!'”
While others have called out the company for reinforcing negative gay stereotypes. One Facebook user wondered “if people would object if they cast an African American man dressed in a black suit to play the role of a blackhead,” before telling his followers to report the ad to GLAAD.
