Watch: Saara Aalto’s Eurovision queer anthem

Saara Aalto has been chosen to represent her home country of Finland in the 2018 Eurovision song contest with an out and proud queer anthem.

The 30-year-old singer, who told the press she is “very proud to be a lesbian”, came to prominence in 2012 when competing in the Finish version of The Voice and then on The X Factor UK.

Speaking of her move to the UK she said, “In Finland, I was too theatrical, too flamboyant. In Finland, they like ’neighbourhood girl’ artists—I wasn’t like that.”

Identifying as bisexual, Aalto has been with her girlfriend, Meri, for a year and insists that being queer “was never an issue”.

“I have always been very fine with who I am and never cared about people’s opinions,” she adds. “If people say nasty things when they are sad with their lives. If you are a balanced, positive person you don’t say bad things to each other. All those people who say bad things are miserable, and I don’t want them to affect my decisions or my life.”

Her Eurovision entry reflects that thinking. She describes the song as being about “living life as you want, finding your strength, being brave as who you are, and not being afraid to show it.”

While the accompanying music video is “sassy, fun, colourful, and versatile”, a veritable gay and flamboyant fantasy.

The 2018 Eurovision competition will take place in Lisbon at the beginning of May.
