Origins of the Term

The word "Sapphic" originates from the name of the ancient Greek poet Sappho, who lived on the island of Lesbos around 600 BCE. Sappho is famous for her lyric poetry, much of which expresses admiration and love for women. Because of her work and her life on Lesbos, the term has grown to generally describe anything related to female love or desire, particularly between women.

What Sapphic Means Today

In contemporary usage, "Sapphic" refers to relationships, attractions, or sexual orientations involving women who love women, though non-binary people may also use the term, too. It’s an inclusive term that can encompass a variety of identities, including, but not limited to, lesbians, bisexual, pansexual and queer women. It celebrates the beauty of female relationships, whether they’re romantic, platonic, or somewhere in between.

Literature and Media

Sapphic themes have found a home in literature, art, and media. Many works highlight the relationships and feelings between women, providing representation and visibility for Sapphic individuals. In recent years, there has been a surge in Sapphic stories in books, films, and TV shows, helping to normalize and celebrate these experiences.

Community and Culture

Being Sapphic isn’t just about attraction; it’s also about community and culture. Many Sapphic women find a sense of belonging in spaces dedicated to women-loving-women. These communities often encourage support, solidarity, and creativity, making it an empowering culture filled with shared experiences.
