White House Insider: Trump Does Not Support Equality Act

An anonymous White House insider has told the Washington Blade that President Donal Trump does not support the Equality Act, a piece of legislation that seeks to extend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include gender identity and sexual orientation.

The bill would essentially guarantee that LGBT+ people could not be legally discriminated against when it came to public accommodations and facilities, education, federal funding, employment, housing, credit, and the jury system.

Public accommodations include “exhibitions, recreation, exercise, amusement, gatherings, displays, goods, services, programs, and transportation services.”

The bill also specifically protects access to “a shared facility, including a restroom, a locker room, and a dressing room, that is in accordance with the individual’s gender identity.”

“The Trump administration absolutely opposes discrimination of any kind and supports the equal treatment of all; however, this bill in its current form is filled with poison pills that threaten to undermine parental and conscience rights,” a senior White House official said in a statement.

Many who oppose the bill fear it will encroach on their so-called “religious freedoms”.
