In 2022, Brittney Griner faced nearly a year in Russian custody after being arrested at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport for marijuana possession. She pled guilty but explained that packing the two vape cartridges was an oversight. Her attorneys provided written evidence that she was prescribed cannabis for chronic pain management.
Eventually, Griner was sentenced to nine years, but was released early in a prisoner exchange facilitated by the Biden administration.
Describing the period of Brittney’s detainment as “one of the darkest moments of my life,” Cherelle Griner expressed profound relief and gratitude towards President Biden and his administration following Brittney’s release.
This year marks Brittney Griner’s 11th season in the WNBA, where she is celebrated as a nine-time WNBA All-Star.
