WorkFair 2022: Why Personal Branding Is Key To Landing Your Dream Job

September 12, 2022

WorkFair host and career coach Lau Albjerg talks about the importance of personal branding during job hunting and how it can help to land your dream job.

Hi Lau, can you tell us a bit about your role as a career coach?

In my early years, I tried quite a few different roles in different sectors, from being a flight attendant to trying my hand at being a photographer, before I found my path in marketing. I worked as a senior brand manager across brands like Sensodyne, NIVEA, and Colgate. Then about five years ago, I reflected on how far I had come and came to a crossroads in my career journey. When I looked at my managers, they didn’t seem to enjoy their jobs very much so I decided it was a good time to take the leap and have a career change. I wrote down all my potential options and tested them out. One of those was training to become a professional career coach. I now facilitate workshops on everything related to personal branding and career management as a career management consultant and brand specialist for many of the world’s leading outplacement and talent development agencies.

Why is personal branding key to an effective job search?

Understanding ways to make your job search more efficient is not about sending 100 applications every day,but rather about making sure you focus on the right applications where you have a higher chance of success. Personal branding is key to effective job searching. Some people are scared by the term “personal branding”because they assume it’s about boasting. However, it’s not about bragging about your skills and accolades. It’s about marketing yourself in a way that will make your talent, skills, and strengths more visible.

Having worked in marketing and branding for so many years before I became a career coach, I learned just how valuable personal branding is while searching for a career, and why it’s key, not only to land your dream job but get ahead in your career.

Can you tell us a bit more about the workshop you will be facilitating at this year’s WorkFair?

This year, I will be hosting the Effective Job Search and Personal Branding workshop. In this session, I will talk about personal branding and ways to make your job search more effective. It’s a must-attend event for LGBTQ+ students, graduates, and young professionals for inspiring tips and tricks to be more effective in their job search. Surprisingly, many are unaware of how the selection process works and some of the pitfalls. Attending my workshop will help. I hope people will be inspired and find some good tips for how they can be more effective in their job search.

As a host of this year’s WorkFair, why should graduates and young professionals attend this year’s event?

We need more diverse talent making it to the interview phase allowing candidates to shine and get their dream job. There are so many exciting workshops and panels taking place during WorkFair this year, alongside the virtual career fair to help young diverse professionals land their dream job. When you are starting your job search early in your career, it’s about being curious and learning as much as you can. There's so much to learn and be inspired by at this year's event. So come and join the learning activities, alongside panel discussions, to help you apply for the right job opportunities. It’s a great chance to be inspired by other queer voices. Lastly, and most importantly, it’s a great opportunity to network. We are a community of LGBTQ+ professionals, so don’t miss the opportunity to connect and network with inclusive employers.
