World-famous gay penguin Sphen passes away

August 23, 2024

Sphen, a beloved gentoo penguin, has passed away at the age of 11, leaving behind his partner Magic and a legacy that captivated hearts worldwide. The charming same-sex couple, who rose to fame at the Sea Life Sydney Aquarium in 2018, made headlines when they fell in love and later adopted two chicks, becoming a symbol of love and equality.

Sphen's enduring romance with Magic has had a lasting impact, inspiring a Mardi Gras float, being featured in Australia’s education syllabus, and even appearing in the Netflix series Atypical. Sea Life Sydney Aquarium officials expressed the profound influence Sphen had as an icon for conservation and equality.

According to the BBC, in the days leading up to his death, Sphen's health had worsened, prompting the aquarium's veterinary team to make the difficult choice to euthanize him earlier this month to alleviate his pain. An investigation into the underlying causes of his health decline is currently underway.

"The loss of Sphen is heartbreaking to the penguin colony, the team, and everyone who has been inspired or positively impacted by Sphen and Magic's story," said Richard Dilly, general manager of the aquarium. "We want to take this opportunity to reflect and celebrate Sphen's life, remembering what an icon he was."

As a sub-Antarctic species, gentoo penguins typically live between 12 and 13 years, and are known for their monogamous nature. Magic, now 8, was taken to see Sphen's body, a gesture aimed at helping him understand that his partner would not return. Responding to the loss, Magic began to sing, a heartfelt action that reverberated through the broader penguin colony.

Aquarium staff are now focused on supporting Magic as he approaches his first breeding season without Sphen. The couple's two fostered chicks, Sphengic, affectionately known as Lara, and Clancy, will also carry on the memory of their loving parents who enjoyed a remarkable six years together.
