WorldPride 2023: What Is It and How Can I Get Involved?

What is WorldPride?

2023 will see Sydney, Australia hosting the eighth WorldPride event, promoting visibility and inclusion for the LGBTQ+ community. The 17-day celebration combines parades, marches, festivals, and human rights conferences to maximize the commemoration and progression of the community.

Established and licensed by InterPride in 1997, with the first event taking place in Rome in 2000, WorldPride is now one of the largest LGBTQ+ Pride events in the world. Annual general meetings are held by InterPride to discuss and vote on the host cities for each event. The selection of Sydney as the next host city coincides with the 50th anniversary of Australian Gay Pride Week and the country’s 5th anniversary since the legalization of same-sex marriage. It also marks the very first WorldPride event in the southern hemisphere.

How Can I Get Involved?

Join in with the events! From February 17th to March 5th, WorldPride will be hosting a range of opportunities for people to display allyship or get involved with their community. Whether it's fun-filled celebrations, like the parades, festivals and club events, or campaigns for change like the human rights conferences and commemorations of trailblazers, there are many ways to get onboard and show your support.

The WorldPride website provides a full list of events to attend. From theatres and galleries, to sporting events, to drag performances, to live music, there’s something to entertain everybody. Kelly Rowland, Kylie Minogue and Charli XCX are among the acts headlining the music stage. Many of the events are completely free of charge too, particularly many of the art/gallery related occasions.
