X-Men ’97 writer confirms fan-favourite character is queer – and in love with Wolverine

X-Men ’97’s first season concluded on Disney+ yesterday, and showrunner Beau DeMayo has provided further insights into the finale, titled ‘Tolerance Is Extinction - Part 3.’

As initially reported on Toonado.com, DeMayo confirmed a long-standing suspicion from the series: Morph indeed harbours romantic feelings for Wolverine. This was subtly suggested in a shower scene earlier in the season, and DeMayo has clarified that the non-binary mutant’s feelings are unrequited.

According to ‘Comic Book Movie’, this revelation adds depth to a scene in the finale where Morph transforms into Jean Grey and, in that guise, tells Logan they love him. What at first seemed to be an act of comforting a dying friend is now understood to be an expression of love.

DeMayo also acknowledged the team behind X-Men ’97 for their faithful recreation of iconic comic book panels and hinted strongly that the merging of Professor X and Magneto’s psyches to form Onslaught was part of his broader plan for the series.

It remains uncertain whether this plan will continue into future seasons now that DeMayo is no longer the Head Writer. He also addressed Gambit's death, indicating it was merely “the first act” of his and Rogue’s story.

In the final moments of ‘Tolerance Is Extinction - Part 3,’ Apocalypse discovers one of Remy’s charred playing cards in the ruins of Genosha, suggesting a possible resurrection as one of the villain’s Four Horsemen: Death.

DeMayo confirmed that the missing X-Men (Wolverine, Morph, Storm, Jubilee, and Sunspot) are located in either 3000 B.C. or 3960 A.D., clarifying that a third, mysterious timeline will not be introduced.

X-Men ’97 revisits the iconic 1990s era, depicting The X-Men as a group of mutants who use their extraordinary abilities to protect a world that both hates and fears them, facing unprecedented challenges and a perilous new future.
