Yance Ford is now the first trans director to be nominated for an Oscar

Yance Ford has become the first transgendered person to be nominated for a directing award at the Oscars. The nominees for the 90th Annual Academy Awards were announced earlier this week with Ford netting a nom for Best Documentary Feature. His film, Netflix documentary Strong Island, has been garnering buzz for a while. With a rare 100% rating on rotten tomatoes and a few awards already under its belt - including the Sundance US Documentary Special Award for Storytelling.

The documentary took over ten years to make and tells the story of Ford’s brother, Willam Ford, who was murdered by a white mechanic in 1992. The emotionally charged documentary explores race relations in America and how “the police turned my brother into the prime suspect in his own murder.”

After scoring the nomination Ford told Entertainment Weekly that “I think that everyone out there should know that there is a generation of trans directors who are coming for the Oscars. So, this might be the first, but it certainly won’t be the last.”
