Join us at the heart of Bournemouth’s LGBT scene to reflect on the history of the LGBT community, and to gain an insight into the issues the community faces today. We will be showcasing some of the integral research Bournemouth University has been undertaking, exploring the lives of those in the LGBT community and learn how we can use this knowledge to help shape our future society

19:15-20:15: Dr. Chris Pullen – Research on Queer Youth Refugees and Trans people coming out in 2018

Christopher Pullen discusses his longstanding research on LGBT identity, with a particular focus on youth, and non-western identity. Exploring his recent biography on the HIV/AIDS activist Pedro Zamora and forthcoming essay on queer youth refugees in Europe (in Queer Generations), a focus is made upon the significance of intimate storytelling and the opportunity of media documentary. Offering both a chance to hear about Dr Pullen’s work processes and offering insight into the stories of brave political activists, an interactive potential is encouraged, which might stimulate new collaborations.

20:45-21:45: Dr. Jayne Caudwell – Transgender peoples’ experiences of sport: participation and fandom.

Jayne Caudwell talks about her small-scale qualitative research with transgender individuals and their experiences of sport, physical activity and active leisure. She starts with a focus on two young [trans]men and their accounts of school sport. The research indicates that Physical Education is often a hostile and unsafe environment for young transgender people. She then moves to more positive research findings that demonstrate how football fandom has been a relatively pleasurable experience for a transgender woman. She concludes with a call for more research with the transgender community to help ascertain the potential of sport and physical activity for embodied wellbeing and mental health.
