The introduction of Section 28, 30 years ago, was a watershed moment for the LGBT+ movement. The amendment to the Local Government Act stated a Local Authority "shall not intentionaly promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homsexuality" or "promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship." The Act was not repealed until 2003. The law casts a long shadow today- with 95% of young people stating that they received no same sex relationship education in November 2017. LGBT+ discrimination is ongoing and needs to be challenged. Sessions include From Section28 to Today, How do we make Schools LGBT+ Friendly? , The Role of Trade Unions, The Stonewall Challenge-practical steps every school can take. The Event is hosted by the National Education Union and all those with an interest in this sector are invited to attend.
