Every Thursday, Zeppelin Hall Biergarten in Jersey City offers half-priced drinks. The place is massive and attracts large crowds of people of every age, background, and orientation, from every walk of life. It's a safe, nonjudgmental space for people to gather, meet, and share.
I'm a discreet, bisexual man that enjoys conversing with others in similar situations. I'm not into the gay scene and generally put-off by establishments that focus on sexuality more than socializing and sharing. Walking into a gay bar sometimes presents a feeling of judgment. People assume you're gay and possibly looking for a hook-up. Inadvertently or subconsciously, this changes the tone of conversations and interactions.
I began to wonder if there was a place where I could go to meet new people without assumptions or sexual undertones, where someone like me could feel comfortable and discreet speaking with like-minded individuals.
Aside from having half-priced drinks, indoor and outdoor seating, and food options, I felt that Zeppelin Hall is a good place to meet. I chose a place close to NYC but far enough away that we won't risk running into friends or regulars at NYC bars.
Here's what I'm proposing: If you're curious and discreet, feel uncomfortable on hook-up apps and/or at gay bars, and seeking a venue where you could be yourself and meet people that share these feelings, join us at Zeppelin Hall on Thursdays between 8pm and 2am. Come alone if you like, or bring your friends who feel the same way. No RSVP necessary.
Keep in mind that not all people there are part of this meet-up—which adds to the discretion of this meet-up—so practice discretion as you normally would. My impression is that for the first few weeks, attendance will be sparse, but at least we can all enjoy half-priced drinks in an enjoyable environment. As the meet-up continues to grow, we'll begin to recognize familiar faces, socialize, form friendships, bond and share, and feel comfortable in a place free of assumptions and stereotypes with others in the same boat.
I hope to see you there.
FAQs
Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
You need to be 21-years-old to enter Zeppelin Hall.
What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?
There is street parking available and nearby parking lots. However if you're coming from NYC, it's best if you take the Journal Square PATH train and exit at Grove St. Walk South on Grove St until you hit Grand St, and make a right. Walk West on Grand St until you hit Liberty View Drive. Make a left and walk one block and you're at Zeppelin Hall. The total walk from Grove Street PATH is about 8 minutes.
You can also take an Uber/Lyft from anywhere and give them the address: 88 Liberty View Drive or just tell them you're going to Zeppelin Hall.
What can I bring into the event?
Bring a positive attitude, a discreet disposition, and an open mind. Remember we're organizing this event at Zeppelin Hall because it's not a gay bar so there will certainly be people there that aren't part of this event. It's a safe, comfortable place to approach others and start conversations. You'll probably figure out pretty quickly if people aren't part of the event or not. If they are, enjoy! If not, move on to the next person. Just please remember to be discreet and respect others' privacy.
Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?
Sure. Make something up. It's about discretion and I'm only using tickets to see how many of us are joining.
