Football, homophobia and the 2018 World Cup

The 2018 FIFA World Cup has elevated public awareness of several political tensions between Russia and the West. Recent media coverage of the intolerant attitudes and mistreatment of the LGBT community in Russia has called into question the suitability of the country to host the event.

In this lecture, Dr. Rory Magrath, Senior Lecturer in the School of Sport, Health and Social Sciences, outlines the relationship between football and homosexuality. He draws upon his data from numerous research projects to illustrate how English football industry has become an increasingly liberal environment, before then discussing the global complexities of football across the world—and what this means for LGBT players in the 21st century.
