It has been widely recognized that the LGBT population is at risk for increased health disparities and suffers from poorer health outcomes relative to non-LGBT people. It is similarly well-established that, as a result of historical and continued discrimination, LGBT people experience a greater rate of poverty, unemployment and, consequently, lack of access to health care. With funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Howard Brown Health Center has developed the Nurses’ Health Education About LGBT Elders (HEALE) which is a 6-hour cultural competency curriculum. This program addresses the disparity and multiple barriers to care among aging LGBT adults to ensure that medical and mental health providers who provide direct care have the additional expertise to meet their needs. Providers who complete this training report feeling much more comfortable being able to service LGBT patients. The Nurses’ HEALE curriculum provides a unique opportunity to augment aging LGBT adult patient-centered care, and insures direct service providers have the opportunity to learn cultural competency and achieve best practice tools to improve health outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

• Define and understand essential terminology and list factors that affect access to medical care for older LGBTQ adults
• Recognize barriers to health care and general health concerns unique to the LGBT elder population
• Understand sex and sexuality in the older LGBT adult
• Recognize legal and financial barriers to care
• Identify best ways to support transgender elders
• Recognize basic principles of HIV transmission and antiretroviral treatment for HIV in aging population

Cecilia (Cec) Hardacker, RN, MSN-CNL is the director of education at Howard Brown Health Center and Project Manager for the Nurses’ HEALE program. She is also an adjunct professor at Rush University College of Nursing. Cecilia and her team present Nurses’ HEALE to academic centers, hospitals, nursing schools, Veteran’s Administration facilities, home health agencies, and elder care facilities. The program provides the medical professional with cross-cultural skills to comprehend and tools to communicate effectively with these diverse and marginalized populations. Ultimately, the goal of her team is to bring cultural awareness, humility, and responsiveness to healthcare providers that will improve health and wellness of LGBTQ patients they serve.

Can I register at the door?

Walk-ins are accepted but admission can not be guaranteed. Check online ticket availability to confirm space and obtain any event updates. At the door registration pricing: $110.
