Join us for an evening of free food, music, discussion and celebration as we reflect on the successes of the LGBT rights movement and the role that the labour and workers’ rights movement played within this struggle.

The evening will be foremost a celebration but will also offer an opportunity to learn more about the role trade unions have played within the history of LGBT struggles, whilst posing important questions about the continuing relationship between the trade union and LGBT movement and particularly the 'Politics of Pride' within what some see as an increasingly consumer driven event.

We will be joined by Peter Purton (A committed campaigner for LGBT rights since the seventies and LGBT officer at the Trades Union Congress until 2016) alongside MP's, councillors, and other leading voices within the LGBT charity and trade union sector in the North East.

Peter Purton was the Trade Union Congress’ disabilities and LGBT officer from 1998 until his retirement in 2016., his latest book, Champions of Equality: Trade Unions and LGBT Rights in Britain, is a comprehensive account of the crucial role that the trade unions played in the fight for equal rights.

2018 marks the 150th year anniversary of the TUC. From the suffrage struggles in the early 1900's and the right to vote, to the free school movement, the formation of the NHS, the fight for gay rights and even the creation of a political party to represent working people, the TUC and the trade unions have been at the heart of change for working people and their families across Britain.

As part of our year of celebrations we will hear from Peter about his book and his role over those years as a campaigner.

And it wouldn’t be a celebration without beer, cake and music, so we will also have a bar, and music from local artists.
