Rearranged TUC Northern Equalities Conference

2018 marks the 150th year anniversary of the TUC. From the suffrage struggles in the early 1900’s and the right to vote, to the free school movement, the formation of the NHS and even the creation of a political party to represent working people, the TUC and the trade unions have been at the heart of change for working people and their families across Britain.
During 2018, there will be a programme of events and activities across the country that celebrate all that the trade union movement has achieved whilst looking to the future of trade unionism and the workers' struggle.
The TUC Northern Equalities Conference is one of our major anniversary events taking place in the North East.
About the conference
An event for trade unions members, reps and full-time officers - It is one day programme of speeches, panel discussions, debates, workshops, followed by opportunities to network and socialise.
The focus of the day will be to celebrate and raise awareness of equalities campaigns past and present whilst strengthening skills and understanding around current equalities issues and struggles.
Speakers include:
Mike Jackson and Dave Lewis, original members of LGSM - Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners strike, whose story was featured in the award-winning film ‘Pride’. "Lesbians & Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) formed in July 1984 to raise money and political support for striking miners and their families. LGSM twinned with the mining communities in South Wales. In June 1985, three months after the end of the strike, LGSM and the South Wales mining communities led the London Lesbian & Gay Pride march.
Aderonke Apata - Human Rights Activist, Feminist and LGBT Equality Advocate. Founder of African Rainbow Family, an LGBT group that supports LGBTIQ asylum seekers and people of African heritage in the UK. Aderonke started the 'Shutdown Yarl's Wood campaign in 2012 from inside the detention centre where she organised and led a demonstration from inside Yarl's Wood detention centre demanding freedom for al
Emma Lewell Buck MP - South Shields. Shadow Minister for Children and Families
Emma Chesworth - North East based feminist activist. She set up the No More Page 3 Teesside group alongside the national campaign. She is the founder of the Eighth Plinth campaign who recently secured the first female statue in Middlesbrough and also a founding member of Free Period NE, a campaign to tackle period poverty in the region.
Ruth Lewis (TBC) Associate Professor in the Department of Social Sciences at Northumbria University. Her research focuses on feminist activism and gender-based violence. Recent work examines online abuse; gender-based violence in universities; women-only space as a political strategy; and feminist activism. She has been involved in feminist activism and networks of various kinds, in universities and in communities.
