The Time For Inclusive Education (TIE) campaign are delighted to be offering this teacher training course, which will have specific sessions covering LGBT-inclusive education within the Primary and Secondary educational sectors, with a supplementary focus on Additional Support Needs.

This event is free of charge, and all teaching staff - practicing, probationary and trainee - are welcome to attend. Lunch will be provided on site. Guest speakers TBC.

Sessions - choose one during sign up which is relevant to your specific area of teaching: e.g. if you are a primary school teacher, sign up for Session 1 - Primary Education. 

Both sessions will be running in conjunction with each other (so it is not possible to attend more than one) and all attendees will receive supplementary input from our Additional Support Needs trainer.

• Celebrating Difference in the Primary School: Tackling LGBT Issues For Our Children & Families - Scott Mowat
  Intended Outcomes: "With an increased focus on Equality as part of the teacher and school remit, and LGBT issues continually at the forefront of the media, this course will offer practical advice on dealing with LGBT issues sensitively within the primary school. With 'How Good is Our School 4' focusing on equality and wellbeing (Quality Indicator 3.1 - Ensuring wellbeing, equality and inclusion), schools need to ensure that they are challenging all forms of discrimination - including homo/bi/transphobia. This course will provide teachers with a secure understanding of current LGBT issues in Scottish Education, including homo/bi/transphobic bullying. During the session, teachers will develop strategies to tackle bullying; support pupils and families, and address LGBT issues in the classroom. This course is interactive - there is a particular focus on delegates sharing their experiences with each other and learning from best practice. Guidance on where to access appropriate materials which can be used across all stages of the nursery and primary school will be provided."
  
  
  
• Checklist for LGBT Curriculum Inclusion in Secondary Education- John-Naples Campbell
  Intended Outcomes: "This session looks at how we make our curriculum truly inclusive and fit for the 21st century. Looking at the Junior and Senior Phase curriculum, we will map where we feel we can highlight LGBT inclusion; find ways to engage young people, and ensure that when looking at LGBT education, we are expanding further than the connection of simply 'sex and relationships education'. 
  
  By the end of this session attendees will:
  
  - Have more confidence in raising the profile of equality within their schools
  - Be able to examine how the Equality Act (2010) impacts on their school community
  - Have strategies in supporting the LGBT community within their schools
  - Begin to look at how to map E&Os in their own curriculum to include LGBT heritage, culture or history

• Getting It Right For Every Child: LGBT Education & Additional Support Needs - Danielle Campbell
  Intended Outcomes: "This session will build confidence in discussing LGBT issues with pupils with ASN. It will be breaking things down into the basic/experiential level. It is important for the young people to feel confident to speak freely, so we will discuss how to organise the pre-session chat and the use of other forms of communication. We will discuss tips on how to create and adapt sessions for pupils with varying needs - which will be stage appropriate as opposed to age appropriate. 
  
  By the end of this session attendees will:
  
  - Know how to cover E&Os at an experiential level
  - Have the confidence to discuss LGBT with pupils with ASN
  - Have the tools to support pupils, such as boardmaker symbols, visuals etc
  - Know how to set up a session: some pupils will need support pre, during & after (transition stages)
  - Have contacts for services who can provide relevant support or workshops

All attendees will be provided with resources and educational materials during the event, as well as a certificate of completion.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Please bring either your printed ticket or your e-ticket (this will be in your confirmation email post-booking) to the event. We will have a list of registered attendees on the day.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

If you cannot attend the event anymore and wish for someone else to take your place, please contact us at [email protected] to let us know. Please ensure that the session is relevant to them - e.g. if you have booked a place on the Secondary session, please ensure that your replacement is also a Secondary teacher.

Are block bookings possible?

As we have limited availability, we do not accept block bookings. If numerous members of staff from a particular school wish to attend, then they will need to book individual tickets. 

Who can attend this training course?

This course is open to all teachers who are currently practicing, on probation or in training. Any teacher, from any post or representing any subject and any year group can attend this event.

What if I have booked a ticket and can no longer attend?

Please let us know if you have booked a ticket and are unable to attend the event, as this will allow us to ensure that someone else can take your place.
