Why should you care about Wikipedia?

Women have and continue to further the advances of science yet many are forgotten, uncredited or lack prominance online. Let's change the status quo by addressing the gender imbalance on Wikipedia! We also strongly encourage biographies on women who identify as LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer/Questioning, and others) or are a POC (person of colour). 

Wikipedia is the 5th most visited site in the world with 1.5 million biographies in English yet only 17% are about women. By teaching people how to edit Wikipedia, we can support trailblazer women in STEM to create balance in gender representation and take away this unfair bias in our historical record.

With your help, we aim to create and edit new Wikipedia pages to shine a light on these incredible women who act as role models to present and future generations. 

Open to all staff and students regardless of subject field or gender; other universities welcome to attend but please register a ticket. Complete beginners and experienced editors are both welcome to attend - we'll provide training for anyone new to editing!

Event Schedule (bring a laptop!):

The event is split into a talk between 1-2pm and then a drop-in Wikithon session between 2-4.30pm - please bring a laptop. You can choose to attend one or both activities - there is no commitment to go to both! If you plan on staying for the Wikithon please follow the pre-event instructions. 

  • 1pm - 2pm: Talk from Dr. Jess Wade (Imperial College) and Dr. Alice White (Wellcome Trust)
    Please arrive before 1.10pm.

  • 2pm - 4.30pm: Wikithon session with hands-on support to edit & create new articles!
    Please bring your laptop!
    Feel free to drop-in or out at any time!

Our speakers:

Jess is a postdoctoral researcher at Imperial College London and master Wikipedia editor. She won the Julia Higgins Medal in 2017 in recognition for her work to support gender equality as well as the IOP Bell-Burnell Award for Women in Physics in 2016 and the IOP Early Career Physics Communicator Prize in 2015.

Alice is the Digital Editor for the Wellcome Collection as well as the Wikimedian in Residence. She was awarded the Women in Engineering Society's Amy Johnson Inspiration Award 2017. Alice completed her Ph.D. in history at the University of Kent and is a fantastic Wikipedia trainer and advocate!
