By Tracy Yap, Regional HR Leader Electrification Distribution Solutions & at ABB.
A wonderful mentor once told, “Always be confident of your abilities and self-worth, because if you don’t believe in yourself, who will?” That advice has stayed with me ever since.
I have spent most of my career in a male-dominated industry. Contrary to the common perception that women might be overlooked in such an industry, I have always felt respected, welcomed, and included. I started within the energy sector and had some short stints with a bank and a retail company before joining ABB. Throughout these experiences, I’ve been very fortunate to have worked with many wonderful leaders, both male and female.
I joined ABB 3.5 years ago and am based in Petaling Jaya (a city just next to Kuala Lumpur), Malaysia. I was hired back in 2021, during Covid times. Currently, I hold two roles: Region HR Leader of the Electrification business’s Distribution Solutions, Smart Power and Smart Buildings Divisions for Asia-Pacific (APAC); and Local HR Business Partner for all Electrification divisions in Malaysia. Despite the turbulence of factory closures, organizational changes, and line manager changes, one constant has been the unwavering support from managers and leaders. They have been a guiding force, advising, advocating, and assisting me throughout my journey.
Though I work in HR, I assure you that this is not mere promotional piece. These are my genuine reflections on my time at ABB thus far. While I cannot speak for everyone, I hope others can resonate with my experience.
One significant experience that solidified my commitment to ABB was becoming a mother two years ago. My leaders and colleagues at ABB were (and still are) incredibly supportive of my motherhood journey. At the time, Malaysia’s maternity leave period was 90 days (now 98 days due to new legislation). I wanted a longer maternity leave as I felt that I would require some extra time to bond with my newborn and adjust to new life as a mother. So, I requested an additional six weeks of unpaid leave. My managers not only approved my request but encouraged my decision. This flexibility is uncommon in many companies in Malaysia, and my friends and family were in awe of the flexibility and support I received from ABB.
I travel quite frequently in my role as a Region HR. I cover 11 countries in APAC and my leaders encourage my travels to the countries periodically to connect with the local teams. Traveling as a female, especially a nursing mother in my first year postpartum, presented unique challenges. Facilities for nursing mothers in Asia often need improvement, and the topic remains somewhat taboo. Despite these challenges, my ABB colleagues have always been kind, understanding and helpful. My management has given me the flexibility to decide my travel schedules, ensuring I never felt obligated to sacrifice family time.
Being a leader does not exempt me from insecurities. During my travels, I have faced critical glances and unspoken judgements from other (usually male) business travelers. These moments sometimes stirred self-doubt, making me feel as if I was not an equal to them. However, at ABB, I have experienced an environment where respect is based on capabilities and contributions, regardless of age, experience, ethnicity, race or gender.
My mentors at ABB consistently remind me to be mentally strong and assertive, to seize opportunities, and to believe in my capabilities and self-worth. One mentor advised, “Do not be forced into doing something just because society or people around expect you to”. This philosophy has pushed me to become a better version of myself, challenging my limits and empowering me to grow. I strive to embody this leadership style, especially for the women in my team. Confidence needs constant reinforcement, and I make a point to boost my colleagues’ confidence through positive feedback and encouragement. Whenever I see a colleague lacking self-confidence, I try to boost their confidence through positive reinforcements of what they have done or achieved, and to open their thoughts to the possibilities of the future.
Over the past three and a half years at ABB, I have learned so much about myself. I am grateful for the opportunities, trust, encouragement, and belief from my mentors and team. Thank you to my leaders and colleagues at ABB for redefining my leadership style and exemplifying inclusivity and equality.
