Gareth Last, Legal Counsel at Superdrug, spoke to myGwork about the importance of LGBTQ+ inclusion in the workplace, and the highlight of his career so far.
Can you tell us a bit about your career journey to date?
I joined AS Watson in August 2024. I am Legal Counsel primarily supporting on commercial contracts, customer services queries and litigation. Previously, I held a number of roles and qualified as a solicitor at American Express.
What attributes do you look for in new recruits and why?
Someone who has a friendly demeanour, a good base knowledge for the job description, with an openness to learn and get stuck in.
How important is LGBTQ+ inclusion in the workplace for you personally?
It is so important to feel like you have a group of people who understand you and the challenges of being LGBTQ+ in the workplace.
What's the biggest highlight of your career to date and why?
Qualifying as a solicitor because it took a lot of work to get there.
What podcast series are you listening to right now for your career development? Are there any DE&I-related podcast series you would recommend?
I only listen to podcasts for fun, and they’re usually true crime…
What was the last book you read (fiction/non-fiction)? Any interesting takeaways, and would you recommend it to fellow leaders? Why?
One of the last books that I recommend to everyone is The Life Impossible by Matt Haig. It is such a fun and beautiful book.
What was your last holiday destination and where do you plan to visit next?
Mallorca was my last holiday, and I'm probably heading to mainland Spain next to visit my partner’s family.
What do you do to relax at the end of a hard working day?
Play some games, watch TV, or doom scroll on TikTok…
