Land is our nation’s greatest asset. Clarity and security of land ownership are essential to a functioning property market.
HM Land Registry maintains a land register of more than 26 million land and property titles in England and Wales, estimated to be worth around £8 trillion. The records are state-guaranteed, which supports secured lending on more than £1 trillion of property.
Critically we also provide property information that influences the decisions of property buyers, sellers, and legal and financial institutions. Citizens, businesses, solicitors, and conveyancers come to us on behalf of their clients to search our records to find out as much as possible about a property before a transaction.
HM Land Registry has a proud history and rich heritage - for more than 160 years, we have protected property ownership and underpinned the modern economy. This uniqueness is what makes us so special.
We employ more than 6.000 expert people in 14 locations across England and Wales. Together they deal with around 35 million requests for information and updates per year. We offer hybrid working and expect everyone to typically spend at least 60% of their working time in the office.
Each colleague plays a vital role in helping HM Land Registry become the world’s leading land registry for speed, simplicity, and an open approach to data. People are encouraged to be innovative and continuously improve what they do and how they do it.

Diversity of background and life experiences brings different insights and encourages change and innovation. Having a more diverse workforce, with an inclusive culture, has been shown to really make a difference to organisational performance. For the benefits of diversity to be felt in HMLR, we need to develop a workforce for the future which more closely reflects wider society and our customers, and create an inclusive environment and culture where differences of thought are respected and actively sought and encouraged.
Our people are our most valuable asset, and everyone at HM Land Registry should feel that they can be themselves at work, valued for the unique perspective they bring, and able to go as far as their talents will take them.
Even though we have things in common with each other we are also different in all sorts of ways. We want everyone to feel valued for who they are and what they bring to their work. Diversity and inclusion brings us all opportunities to learn from others and grow.
We have eight networks you might like to join all supported by Senior Diversity Champions from our Senior Civil Servants and a network of Inclusion Champions based in our local offices.
