An independent association

The Mario Mieli Homosexual Culture Club is an independent association founded in 1983 from the merger of two Roman organisations, “Fuori” and “Collettivo Narciso”: it deals with the claim and protection of the civil rights of LGBTQI people (lesbians, gays, bisexuals , trans, queer, intersexual) and the person in general, of the fight against all forms of discrimination and promotes cultural and socialization activities (Le Domeniche al Mieli, La Vie En Rose, youth group).

Since its inception, the Club has been committed to combating HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections by promoting correct information and prevention on all sexually transmitted infections; supports people living with HIV and fights against stigma.

The Club operates in the political, social, cultural sector and collaborates with other LGBTI organizations and with organizations whose aim is the defense and promotion of human and civil rights and the fight against discrimination.

In the political sphere it works against homophobic and transphobic prejudice, in the field of civil rights and for a culture of differences, also with pressure on the mass media, parties and institutions, in order to change the discriminatory attitude both for sexual orientation and for identity type. To this end, the Club carries out political initiatives, debates, demonstrations and has taken care of the organization of Pride in Rome since 1994.

40 years ago, exactly on 12 March 1983, Mario Mieli died, an intellectual outside of any mold, cultured and non-conformist, a fundamental figure of the twentieth century in the field of gender studies. With his theses and not without provocations, he exposed the crisis of the bourgeois model and contributed to opening up reflection and discussion on the roles and identities that make up our society.

It was precisely following his death that the founders of our association decided to name the club that was being formed from the union of the Collettivo Narciso and FUORI after Mario Mieli, of which he himself was the promoter.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the “Mario Mieli” Homosexual Culture Club we are preparing many events including theatrical performances, a large exhibition in June, debates and other surprises.

Furthermore, for the occasion we have adopted a new temporary logo that appears on the 2023 Club card, dedicated precisely to Mario Mieli and the history of the Club.
